Early Mountain Vineyards is an award-winning estate winery nestled in the rolling hills of Madison County, Virginia, situated at the northernmost point on the celebrated Monticello Wine Trail. Producing wine since 2012, the winery farms more than 55 acres across two distinctive vineyards — the Early Mountain estate at 600 feet elevation and the mountainside Quaker Run vineyard 14 miles north, with plantings ranging from 1,000 to 1,400 feet. Under the direction of Winemaker Maya Hood White, the team crafts elegant, terroir-driven wines from varieties ideally suited to Virginia's climate, including Cabernet Franc, Petit Manseng, Merlot, Tannat, Sauvignon Blanc, Petit Verdot, and Albarino.
Early Mountain's wines have earned broad acclaim, with a philosophy rooted in listening to what the vine, soil, and climate have to offer each vintage. The estate's varied soils — from rocky, well-drained mountainside plots ideal for red varieties to heavier clay valley soils that excel for Petit Manseng and whites — allow the team to craft site-specific and blended bottlings that genuinely express their place. Flagship wines include Foothills, Soif, Novum, and a range of single-vineyard Cabernet Francs.
Complementing the wines is an elevated culinary program led by Chef Tim Moore and Chef de Cuisine Kristen Hall, who transform seasonal bounty from local farms into dishes that harmonize with the winery's expressive portfolio. The property also serves as an event and wedding venue, and visitors are encouraged to call ahead, as private events occasionally close the tasting room to walk-in guests. Early Mountain is approximately two hours from both Washington, D.C. and Richmond, making it a popular destination escape.
