The Whole Ox

The Whole Ox is an old-fashioned, full-service butcher shop housed in the historic Old Post Office Building in downtown Marshall, Virginia. Specializing in whole, local foods sourced from neighboring farms, the shop carries pasture-raised meats free from hormones and antibiotics — custom-cut in house and ground fresh for their beloved burgers. The same ethos of ethical, sustainable farming extends to every product on the shelves: local produce, artisan cheeses, dairy, eggs, specialty grocery items, charcuterie, bread, and a well-curated selection of wine, beer, and amaro. Beyond the butcher counter, The Whole Ox offers an impressive lineup of prepared foods — from hearty soups and stocks to chicken pot pies baked in sustainably harvested wooden Panibois containers. A casual dine-in burger and sandwich menu rounds out the experience, featuring house-ground beef patties, fried chicken sandwiches, and hand-cut fries cooked in local beef tallow. Seasonal specials like Thanksgiving heritage turkeys and holiday provisions have made the shop a beloved community institution. Ordering is easy and flexible: shop in person Tuesday through Saturday, call ahead, or use the online ordering system for no-contact pickup or local delivery (available Thursday–Saturday).
